Chairperson Warren opened the hearing on SB497.
Jason Thompson, Senior Assistant Revisor, provided an overview of the bill and responded to questions. (Attachment 14)
Michelle McCormick testified in support of SB497, stating a multidisciplinary response is the most effective way to end human trafficking but it requires a shared base of understanding what human trafficking looks like in Kansas. (Attachment 15)
Dr. Sharon Sullivan testified in support of SB497, stating human trafficking is a very complex crime but comprehensive and ongoing training is needed to identify the signs of human trafficking and how to respond appropriately and can best be achieved through legislation. (Attachment 16)
Faron Barr, testified in support of SB497, stating identification of what human trafficking looks like is important for prevention advocacy and aids in reducing the occurrence, as well as help with victim aid and reintegration. (Attachment 17)
Usha Reddi testified in support of SB497, stating human trafficking awareness and education is essential to empower professionals who work with vulnerable populations. (Attachment 18)
Phillip Cosby testified in support of SB497 and widespread education on sex trafficking. (Attachment 19)
Ashleigh Chapman testified in support of SB497, stating human trafficking is often hidden in plain sight and a law mandating training for key community stakeholders will increase identification, care, and outcomes for survivors. (Attachment 20)
