The Chair opened the meeting and granted a personal privilege to Senator Hawk, who introduced three students from Clay Center High School who were shadowing him in the Capitol: Lane Musselman, Ryan Bemfer and Alek Tipsword were welcomed by the committee.
Chairperson Petersen opened the hearing on SB 309 and requested a review of the bill. Assistant Revisor Adam Siebers briefed the committee on the boundaries designated in the bill naming a small portion of Highway 69 in honor of Walter Scott Brown (Attachment1).
Kevin Barnes, speaking as a proponent of SB 309, recalled the qualifications, service, and sacrifice of Walter Scott Brown, who enlisted in the Navy in 1940 (Attachment 2). His service of bravery was commended by the Commander in Chief of the United States Fleet; in his honor a Navy escort ship was commissioned and named in his honor; it led many escort convoys during the European Theater. Mr. Barnes requested the portion of highway 69 be recognized as the Walter Scott Brown Memorial Highway.
