Staff briefed the Committee on the contents of this bill. (Attachment 6)
The Chairman recognized Col. Herman Jones. (Attachment 7) According to Col. Jones, drivers who exceed the maximum posted speed limit endanger their lives and the lives of all other motorists. He said according to the latest published data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed was a factor in over 25% of all traffic fatalities nationwide. He said the Highway Patrol has seen a significant increase in the number of citations issued to drivers who are traveling 100 or more miles per hour since 2019. He had a chart illustrating the increase in the 100+ miles per hour citations. In conclusion he said the Highway Patrol supports this bill because they believe it increases the safety of Kansans on our state's roadways.
