Minutes for SB53 - Committee on Federal and State Affairs
Short Title
Designating the official red and white wine grapes of Kansas.
Minutes Content for Tue, Mar 19, 2019
Chairperson Barker opened the hearing on SB53. He stated he has to leave for a few minutes to have his picture taken with his pages and the Governor. Vice-Chairperson Awerkamp then presided over the hearing. Jason Long, Revisor, provided an overview of the bill. Representative Humphries had a question.
Vice-Chairperson Awerkamp recognized Philip Bradley as a proponent of SB53 (Attachment 1) (Attachment 1A). He stated that the grapes used in these wines have a long history in the midwest and are relatively unique to the midwest. No other states have these grapes as their official grape. The Chambourcin grape is made up into a medium-bodied red wine that has a spicy aftertone. The Vignoles is made into a full-bodied white wine that is very fruity without being sweet. Questions were asked by Representatives Ruiz, Clayton, and Highberger.
Bob DesRuisseaux testified as a proponent of SB53 (Attachment 2). He stated both Chambourcin and Vignoles are the most widely planted and harvested wine grapes in Kansas. They make outstanding wines. Questions were asked by Vice-Chairperson Awerkamp and Representative Humphries.
Vice-Chairperson Awerkamp noted that there was written proponent testimony from Chris Tymeson (Attachment 3).
Vice-Chairperson Awerkamp noted that there were no opponents or neutrals on SB53. He closed the hearing on SB53.
