Mike Heim gave an overview of HB2650, which designates the state rock as limestone, the state mineral as galena, the state gemstone as jelinite amber, and the state fish as the channel catfish.
Proponents
Chrisopher Tymeson, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, spoke to the committee regarding HB2650, especially the channel catfish. He noted that kids all across the state learn these symbols and they are the things that make us proud to be Kansans. (Attachment 1)
Questions were asked by Senators: Rob Olson, and Ty Masterson.
Jackson & Mariner Svaty, young Kansas citizens, spoke to the committee regarding HB2650. Jackson and Mariner spoke to the committee about some important facts about all these proposed Kansas symbols. Jackson recommended that instead of naming the state rock, limestone that we should declare a limestone specific to Kansas. Their recommendation is the green horn limestone, which has the most distribution state wide from Ford county to Washington county. (Attachment 2)
Senator Jeff Longbine asked for a rules exception so the committee could give the speakers a round of applause. It was so granted and applause commenced.

Chair Bud Estes asked if we might have a conceptual amendment to have the green horn limestone be inserted as the state rock.
The hearing was suspended to insert an amendment into HB2650.
Senator Lynn Rogers moved a conceptual amendment to HB2650 that would insert the specific green horn limestone into the bill as the states official state rock, seconded by Senator Rob Olson. Motion to amend passed.
The hearing on HB2650 was reopened.
