Scott Wells, Assistant Revisor provided an overview on HB2492 stating the bill would allow the Board of County Commissioners of Thomas County to submit to the voters a proposal to increase the county sales tax by 0.25% which will go for the construction of a criminal justice center and repurposing of the courthouse.
Representative Smith, on behalf of Mike Baughn, Chairperson of the Thomas County Commission testified in support of HB2492 (Attachment 2), stating this bill is a local decision and gives the Thomas Board of County Commissioners the authority to increase the sales tax rate to 1.75%..
Representative Smith stood for questions.
Responding to a question from Representative Corbert, Mr. Wells stated when the bonds are paid the taxes will expire.
After asking if there were any other conferees and seeing none, Chairperson Johnson closed the hearing on HB2492.
The Committee acknowledged receipt of the proposal from Legislative Post Audit to evaluate tax incentives, which was previously requested during the meeting held on January 17, 2018 (Attachment 3).
