The Chairperson opened the hearing on SB 201.
Senator Lynn Rogers stated that SB 201 corrects an oversight in the Kansas Consumer's Protection Act. The intent of the Act is to protect various citizens in the conduct of business. One class left unprotected is the "active members" of the military.(Attachment 1)
Gaye Tibbets, an attorney from Wichita, told of her experience with an active duty service member, Joe Wylie, who had a devastating hit to his credit report.This involved difficulties with a mortgage company while he was stationed overseas.(Attachment 2)
The testimony by John Wright, who is Joe Wylie's father-in-law gives a different perspective of troubles with a mortgage company.(Attachment 3)
Attorney General Schmidt says that this bill would include active duty, active reserve unit and members of the National Guard as "protected consumers" This designation would allow them greater protection.(Attachment 4)
