Chairperson LaTurner opened the hearing on SB 85.
Brenda Spurlock spoke on her experiences with her own special needs children and her support of SB 85 (Attachment 1).
Sheryl Crosier told of the pain that she and her husband went through because their parental rights were taken away. Care was withheld and a DNR order placed in their son's chart without their knowledge. That is why they support SB 85 so no other parents go through what they went through (Attachment 2).
Lois Crosier, Simon's grandmother, supports SB 85 to see that her other grandchildren's rights are protected (Attachment 3).
Laurie Castellanos, Simon's aunt, spoke in favor of SB 85 (Attachment 4).
Barbara Saldivar spoke on behalf of Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Kansas in support of SB 85 (Attachment 5).
Kathy Ostrowski spoke in support of SB 85 (Attachment 6).
Michael Schuttloffel spoke in favor of SB 85 which takes a measured approach in addressing important questions of parental rights and end-of-life decision making (Attachment 7).
Steve Brunk spoke in favor of SB 85. This bill states that there shall not be a "do-not resuscitate order given without the written permission of a patient's parent or guardian (Attachment 8).

Dr.Emily Riegel spoke in opposition SB 85 stating that the concerns she has about this bill are directly related with the ways in which this type of legislation would directly affect health care providers and families alike when facing these most delicate and fragile of scenarios in which we are often providing care to the most delicate and fragile of children (Attachment 13).
Dr. Riegel was the only person who spoke in opposition to SB 85. Three others gave written testimony.
