Short Title
Easing communications with political campaign officers and party committees through requiring email addresses in reports to secretary of state.
Minutes Content for Wed, Feb 1, 2017
Chairperson Bowers opened the hearing on SB57. Chuck Reimer, staff revisor, presented a briefing on the bill.
Carol Williams testified in support of SB57 indicating that this is just a means for the Commission staff to communicate with the candidate's treasurer as well as PAC and party officers. Ms. Williams responded to questions from Committee members. (Attachment 2)
Cille King testified in support of SB57. Ms. King indicated that the current Form CD from the Secretary of State's office shows phone, cell phone, e-mail and website as optional. Ms. King stated that when their volunteers go in to look at the Secretary of State's website to find the candidates and try to contact them to send questionnaires or invite them for forums, some of those candidates have none of that contact information. Ms. King stated that they would like to see this bill amended to include at least an e-mail contact for each candidate. (Attachment 3)
Chairperson Bowers asked if there were any other conferees who would like to speak.
Bryan Caskey presented neutral testimony on SB57 indicating that the Secretary of State would accommodate the bill as it's currently written. Mr. Caskey clarified that the bill is talking about the Appointment of Treasurer form. Mr. Caskey indicated that the form the League of Women Voters referenced is the form that you fill out when you file for office which is not the same form, not the same purpose. No written testimony was provided.
After questions from the Committee members were addressed, Chairperson Bowers closed the hearing on SB57.
