65-1,250. (a) This section shall be cited as the umbilical cord donation information act. (b) A health care provider providing health care services to a pregnant woman during the last trimester of such pregnancy, which health care services are directly related to such pregnancy, shall whenever practical advise such person of options to donate an umbilical cord following the delivery of a newborn child. Provision in a timely manner of information prepared by the department of health and environment pursuant to subsection (c) shall constitute compliance with this subsection. (c) The department of health and environment shall, by July 1, 2007, prepare and make information available on its website that includes the following: (1) The medical processes involved in the collection of umbilical cords; (2) the medical risks to a mother and the newborn child of umbilical cord collection; (3) the current and potential future medical uses and benefits of umbilical cord collection to the birth mother, the newborn child and the biological family; (4) the current and potential future medical uses and benefits of umbilical cord collection to persons who are not biologically related to the birth mother or the newborn child; (5) any costs that may be incurred by a pregnant woman who chooses to make an umbilical cord donation; (6) options for ownership and future use of the donated material; and (7) the availability in this state of umbilical cord donations. |
