The Chair opened the hearing on HB2155. Jason Thompson, Senior Assistant Revisor of Statutes provided an overview of the bill. (Attachment 1)
Sheriff Jeff Easter testified in support of the bill on behalf of the Kansas Sheriffs' Association (KSA). This bill would amend Kansas Statute 19-811 by inserting the term "official acts" into the statute to clarify that the sheriff and his or her sureties is liable only for the official acts of deputies or jailers. This would align with current case law as reflected in Kansas Statute 19-805 and would clear up any misunderstanding between the two current statutes. (Attachment 2)
