Chairperson Petersen opened the Hearing on HB2471. Adam Siebers gave an explanation of the bill. (Attachment 1) There were no questions. 

Katie Smith spoke in support of HB2471 which would designate a portion of I-135 as the Deputy Sam Smith Memorial Highway and re-designating a current potion of the 35th Infantry Division Memorial Highway for I-13.  (Attachment 2) She told of her son's many accomplishments and awards he had received in his 22 years and how he is still remembered with a Deputy Sam Smith Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to students in Franklin County who are interested in law enforcement or becoming a first responder. She said Sam was a loving son, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He loved his community and he tried to show that to the best of his ability. 

Kiel Lasswell, gave proponent testimony. (Attachment 3) He said he and Sam Smith were hired by the Sheriff's Office at the same time. On the night of Sam's passing, Undersheriff Kiel Lasswell accompanied the Sheriff to Sam's mother's home to notify her. He looks forward to the day he sees Sam's name proudly displayed on the side of the highway directly in the heart of Franklin County.
