Minutes for HB2695 - Committee on Judiciary
Short Title
Allowing special agents from the department of corrections to attend the Kansas law enforcement training center.
Minutes Content for Tue, Mar 10, 2020
Jason Thompson gave a brief on HB2695 explaining that it will allow certain employees of the Department of Corrections to attend courses at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. (Attachment 6)
Randy Bowman spoke in support of HB2695 explaining that it would allow 10 employees (not all of the 3500 corrections employees) to get training given to deputies. This would allow those trained at the Center to receive certification or to renew existing certification. It also allows them to take refresher courses that enables them to keep their certification. Making this adjustment to the law is more cost effective than other options for training the ten people. (Attachment 7)
Ed Klumpp spoke in support of HB2695 explaining how important it is for Department of Corrections employees to have the same standardized training as other law enforcement. It is a matter of safety. In an emergency situation, all officers need to have the same training, the same responses, so they can work smoothly together and not endanger themselves or others. (Attachment 8)
There was discussion.
The hearing was closed. The meeting adjourned at 11:02 AM.
