Proponents
The Chairman recognized Senator Elaine Bowers.(Attachment 1) She said this bill would designate the portion of US Highway 77 from the eastern city limits of Blue Rapids to the junction with K-9, in Marshall County, as the Cpl. Allen E. Oatney and SP4 Gene A. Myers Memorial Highway. The designation of Prairie Parkway would be removed from this portion of US Highway 77. She said the two men were both killed in action in Vietnam, Corporal Oatney in 1970 and SP4 Meyers in 1969.
Jerry Zayas said both men exemplified the unique characteristics of courage and devotion to country which is so common in their towns. (Attachment 2) He said they want to make sure they are not forgotten and this was a good way of honoring a couple of American heroes.
Janet Zayas, Bill Barrington and Roger Edwards gave in-depth background information on both men and told of their impact on their community. (Attachment 3)
