Chairperson Bowers opened the hearing on HB2509. Mike Heim, staff revisor, presented a briefing on the bill.
Representative Schreiber, presenting for Mayor Dustin Wright, testified in support of HB2509. Representative Schreiber indicated Americus has two blocks with a restriction from the original plat; one for a college and one for a park. Representative Schreiber stated they would like to free those two blocks up for their city development. Representative Schreiber responded to questions from the Committee. (Attachment 1)
Amanda Stanley testified in support of HB2509. Ms. Stanley indicated there is a huge need for single-family homes in Americus. Ms. Stanley stated they would like to be able to either sell the land and use it for development to increase their tax base or use it for some other productive purpose. Ms. Stanley explained this land has sat frozen in time; the city cannot do anything unless this body vacates those original dedications. (Attachment 2)
