Chairperson Barker opened the hearing on HB2650. Jason Long, Revisor, provided an overview of the bill (Attachment 1).
Chairperson Barker recognized Representative Pittman as a proponent of HB2650 (Attachment 2). He stated he had worked with the Governor's office to declare February 15, 2020 as Susan B. Anthony Day. This bill would designate February 15 as Susan B. Anthony Day every year. He testified that Susan B. Anthony has significant contacts with Kansas and was one of the first people to come out publicly for women's right to vote when she gave a speech in Coffey County, Kansas, on July 4, 1865. She also spent a lot of time in Leavenworth. He also stated Kansas was one of the first states in the union to recognize women's right to vote.
Chairperson Barker directed the Committee's attention to the written proponent testimony of Mary Ann Sachse Brown (Attachment 3); Jeanne Gehret (Attachment 4); Rosalee Robinson (Attachment 5); Marti Sachse Judson (Attachment 6); Kristi K. Lee, Leavenworth Convention and Visitors Bureau (Attachment 7); Bernadette Cahill (Attachment 8); and Laura Elkins (Attachment 9).
Chairperson Barker noted there were no opponents or neutrals. He closed the hearing on HB2650.
