Minutes for SB381 - Committee on Education
Short Title
Authorizing medical student and residency loan assistance to encourage the practice of obstetrics and gynecology in medically underserved areas of the state.
Minutes Content for Thu, Feb 20, 2020
Senator Molly Baumgardner, District 37, Kansas Senate, explained that this bill expands the current Kansas Medical Student Loan (KMSL) program. Kansas is one of only four states that does not include obstetrics-gynecology in a rural and underserved loan repayment program. Currently there are no ob-gyn practitioners in 77 of our 105 counties. When we consider the shortage of medical personnel in our Community Health Centers, more than one-fifth of the full-term vacancies are for ob-gyn positions. SB381 would provide these communities with access to specialized medical care to address women’s health issues.(Attachment 1)
