Chairperson Kerschen opened the hearing on SB 285.
Tamera Lawrence with the Revisor of Statutes Office explained the bill.
Tom Palace testified in support of the bill. He explained that the bill extends the Underground Storage Tank Development fund from 2024to 2032. In addition it allows for funding to pull abandoned USTs up to $25,000 and provides for permanent closure of USTs.(Attachment 1)
Shahira Stafford spoke in favor of the bill. She believes that the redevelopment fund addressed in the bill has successfully helped over 95 facilities in the removal of 293 abandoned underground storage tanks. This bill would extend the sunset of this redevelopment fund program through 2032 which will encourage the removal of the estimated 270 underground storage tanks that remain in the ground.(Attachment 2)
Randy Stookey spoke in support of the bill. He told the committee that removal of the abandoned tanks leads to quicker identification of potential contamination.(Attachment 3)
Bob Jurgens testified in support of the bill. He believes that the bill will have a positive impact by extending the availability of the funds to reimburse future abandoned removal activities and access potential contamination sources.(Attachment 4)
