The Chair opened the hearing on SB237.
Staff Adam Siebers briefed the Committee on the bill. He stated that the bill would designate the roadway from the junction of K-16 and 251st Street in Leavenworth County southeast on K-16 to the junction of K16 and Parallel Road as the John Lee Bremer Memorial Highway. The cost is estimated to be $3360.
Senator Tom Holland, Senate District 3, appeared as a proponent for the bill (Attachment 1). He then introduced members of the Bremer family
Tina Bremer, widow of John Lee Bremer, explained that her husband had been killed in a motorcycle accident at that location and that, when family members suggested the area be designated a memorial highway to honor her husband, she agreed. She related how her husband served in the military and loved his country; she provided detailed information about his background and the medals of distinction he received while serving in the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Attachment 2).
Adam Wright, son-in-law to John Lee Bremer, also referenced his father-in-law's accomplishments as support for the bill.
The Kansas Department of Transportation provided written neutral testimony regarding the bill (Attachment 3).
The Chair closed the hearing on SB237.
