Jason Thompson gave a presentation on SB269 explaining that it increases the mandatory retirement age for judges to 80 years of age. (Attachment 1)
There were questions from the Committee.
The Kansas Division of the Budget supplied a Fiscal Note for the bill.(Attachment 2)
Senator Vic Miller testified as a proponent of SB269 explaining that the current mandatory retirement system is unfair because it treats people differently according to how their birthdays fall. Some are forced to retire at age 75 and some are allowed to finish their terms, which may let them retire as old as almost 79. This bill will set a definite deadline for retirement. (Attachment 3)
Norbert Marek testified as a proponent of SB269 explaining the history of judicial retirement and the need for this change.(Attachment 4)
