Amending and repealing reapportionment census data laws to conform with 2019 amendments to the Kansas constitution, and to remove certain obsolete provisions.

Chairperson Bowers opened the hearing on SB257. Charles Reimer, staff revisor, presented a briefing on the bill and provided a handout listing the statutes that are being repealed. (Attachment 3)
Katie Koupal testified in support of SB257. Ms. Koupal indicated the bill removes references of the census adjustment from state statute and also updates redistricting language to state that the Kansas Legislature will use federal census numbers for redistricting purposes. Ms. Koupal stated the final portion of the bill would eliminate statutes pertaining to the one-time only state-conducted census in 1988. (Attachment 4)
After questions from the Committee were addressed, Chairperson Bowers closed the hearing on SB257.
