Minutes for SB71 - Committee on Education
Short Title
Eliminating the expiration of the postsecondary technical education authority and requiring a report to the legislature.
Minutes Content for Mon, Mar 11, 2019
Chairperson Huebert called the meeting to order and opened the hearing on SB71.
Revisor Zach Fridell presented a brief overview of the legislation.
Dr. Blake Flanders presented the perspective of the Board of Regents. The Technical Education Authority (TEA) was initially created in 2007 and last approved in 2017. In 2006, there was a shortage of persons in nursing and other technical jobs. The TEA was created with an ending date in mind, a sunset clause, but the needs this program addresses are still current. Removing the sunset allows it to continue the work of education and recruitment in order to provide qualified workers for these crucial jobs in Kansas. (Attachment 1)
