Chairperson Petersen opened the hearing on HB2127. Mr. Siebers stated that the bill would simply remove the statutory requirements for markings of gross weight, a company designation, the city of origination, and other trademarks on commercial trucks and tractor trucks.
Tom Whitaker, Executive Director, Kansas Motor Carriers Association, spoke as a proponent of HB2127, saying that Kansas is the only state that requires interstate trucks to have the designation of the company, the city of origination, and the gross weight visible on both sides of the vehicle. Mr. Whitaker said all other states require compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules, which require a carriers' name and a U.S. DOT number. He indicated that approval of the bill would make Kansas consistent with all other continental states and eliminate duplicative marking requirements (Attachment 6).
