Designating a bridge on United States highway 77 in Cowley county as the SGT Kevin Gilbertson veterans memorial bridge.

Chairperson Petersen opened the hearing on SB 136 and acknowledged Senator Larry Alley for presentation of the bill (Attachment 1). Senator Alley introduced Mr. and Mrs. Randy Frank, who made the original request to have their son's name added to the Bridges for the Fallen, an organization which recognizes fallen heros and their Gold Star Families. Senator Alley said this bill would place the name of SGT Kevin A. Gilbertson on the South Summit Bridge on US 77 in Cowley County, Kansas. Senator Alley requested an amendment be considered to add the initial A to SGT Gilbertson's name on the memorial (Attachment 2).
Senator Alley responded to questions:
- The family is aware of extra cost and maintenance requirements.
- Signs will be placed on both the North and South sides of the brigde; a Blue Star Park sign is already in place.
- No modifications are needed at the site (Joel Skelley, Director of Policy, KDOT).
Senator Braun thanked the family for their request and pledged a donation of $100.00 to the fund for this project.
