Short Title
Designating a bridge on United States highway 77 in Cowley county as the SGT Kevin Gilbertson veterans memorial bridge.
Minutes Content for Tue, Feb 19, 2019
Staff briefed the Committee on the bill's contents. The Chairman recognized Senator Larry Alley as the proponent for this bill. (Attachment 1) Senator Alley said this bill requests the South Summit Bridge on US Highway 77 in Cowley County be designated as the Sgt. Kevin Gilbertson veterans memorial bridge. According to Senator Alley, Sgt. Gilbertson paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Iraq. To keep his memory alive his Gold Star Family requested their son's name be added to the Bridges for the Fallen. Senator Alley asked for an amendment to this bill to add Sgt. Gilbertson's middle initial which is "A".
The Chairman drew the Committee's attention to Written Testimony provided by the KS Department of Transportation in support of HB2221.(Attachment 2) KDOT brought up a needed change because under the requirements of the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the word "Veterans" is not permitted. KDOT requested an amendment in order to maintain compliance with the guidelines.
The Chairman asked if there were any other proponents, neutrals or opponents. There were none so after questions were answered the Chairman closed the hearing on HB2221 and opened the hearing on HB2225.
