Chairman Proehl recognized Representative Gail Finney as the first proponent.(Attachment 5) According to Representative Finney, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is an international service organization and is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African-American college-educated women. She said the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.
Chardae Caine was the next proponent. (Attachment 6) Ms. Caine said she became a member of AKA Sorority seven years ago while attending Auburn University and then when she moved to Topeka she was able to immerse herself into the community and get to know other women who serve the city and state. According to Ms. Caine their mission of being of service to all mankind has led to programs of excellency that assist the communities they serve in reaching success and meeting the needs of all.
The Chairman drew the Committee's attention to written testimony submitted in support of HB2095 by Joy Barnes, Member, AKA Sorority, (Attachment 7) and Twyla G. Woods-Buford, on behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mid-Western Region. (Attachment 8)
After all questions were answered the Chairman asked if there were any other proponents, neutrals or opponents. There were none so the Chairman closed the hearing on HB2095 and opened the hearing on HB2117.
