Short Title
Proud educator license plate.
Minutes Content for Tue, Feb 12, 2019
Staff explained the bill. Chairman Proehl recognized Representative Les Mason who said he was proud to offer strong support of the "Proud Educator" distinctive license plate. (Attachment 2) He encouraged the Committee's support of HB2071.
The next proponent recognized was Erica Shook. (Attachment 3) Ms. Shook was the originator of this bill. She said the license plates allow everyone in education in Kansas to show their pride in their profession. She also said the proceeds will go into a fund that will allow the Kansas Educators Support Foundation and the Kansas Independent Colleges Foundation to issue grants twice a year to first-year teachers as they enter their first classroom.
The third proponent was Matt Lindsey. (Attachment 4) According to Mr. Lindsey, fifteen of the nineteen Kansas Independent College institutions offer teacher education programs and they annually award about 20% of the bachelor's degrees in teacher education in Kansas. He said they care deeply about the work of educators in Kansas as well as the young people they educate.
After all questions were answered the Chairman asked if there were any other proponents, neutrals or opponents. There were none so he closed the hearing on HB2071 and opened the hearing on HB2095.
