Staff briefed the Committee on the contents of the bill. (Attachment 1)There were no questions.

The Chairman called on Rep. Susan Ruiz as the first proponent.

According to Representative Ruiz this bill updates the veterans claims assistance program to include references to veterans affairs medical centers and cross-accreditation requirements.(Attachment 2)  She said K.S.A. 73-1234 stipulates that the Kansas commission on veterans affairs office shall establish and administer a veterans claims assistance program to improve the coordination of veterans benefits counseling in Kansas. She stood for questions.

The next proponent was Eric Rohleder. (Attachment 3) He said this bill addresses minor changes to K.S.A. 73-1234, the Veterans Claims Assistance Program statute. He said when this statute was originally signed into law, the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers was the preferred training program but since that time, numerous other organizations have been recognized and approved by the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs to provide Veteran Service Representative training. He stood for questions.

Mike Kelly, MOAA,  came forward in support of this bill.

There were no other proponents, opponents or neutrals so the Chairman closed the hearing on HB2623 and called for final action on HB2624.
