Chairperson Smith opened the hearing for HB2470.

Mr. Siebers provided an overview for HB2470 to extend the deadline to file claims under the Homestead Property Tax Refund Act. (Attachment 4)

Kathleen Smith, Kansas Department of Revenue stated the Department estimated HB2470 could possibly have a fiscal impact but is unknown at this time.  She stated the Department already allows claims to be filed after the due date whenever good cause exists, provided the claim is filed within four years of the original due date. Ms. Smith stood for questions from Committee members.

Proponents:

Representative Turner, 28th District, testified as a proponent for HB2470 noting the bill would extend the deadline for filing Homestead property tax rebate claims by three years. The Homestead Property Tax Refund is a rebate program for the property taxes paid by homeowners that have low income and a home valued at $350,000 or less. (Attachment 5)  Representative Turner stood for questions from Committee members.
