Minutes for HB2262 - Committee on Public Health and Welfare
Short Title
Allowing six months of an embalmer apprenticeship to be completed prior to an individual attending mortuary science school
Minutes Content for Wed, Mar 8, 2023
Jenna Moyer, Staff Revisor, gave an overview of the bill.
Pam Scott testified in support of HB2262 which would provide an applicant for a Kansas embalmers license the option to serve a split apprenticeship. In a split apprenticeship, the first six-months of the apprenticeship could be served after graduation from mortuary science school and passage of the National Board Exam. As like other states, Kansas is experiencing a shortage of licensed embalmers. Providing a split apprenticeship would be beneficial for those interested in entering the profession. HB2262 could shorten the length of time it takes to obtain a degree. The Kansas Funeral Directors Association believes this change in the law would make it easier to attract potential quality embalming students and future embalmers to Kansas. (Attachment 1)
