Minutes Content for Wed, Feb 15, 2023
Chairperson Longbine opened the meeting and welcomed members, staff, and guests. He recognized Senator Dietrich for a point of personal privilege. Senator Dietrich introduced Braxton Bohnstedt, John Conrad, Akul Chamesh, and William Heinen, all from Indian Hills Elementary in U.S.D. 437, who are Pages for the Senator today.
Chairperson Longbine also recognized Senator Warren, who, because of a problem at the prior committee meeting, had not been able to locate her documents in her files, as well as online. She wanted to clarify today that she did have all her documents and was able to also find them online. For the benefit of others who might look online, she remarked that there were a couple of ways to locate committee documents and each committee seems to differently handle their online archive.
Chairperson Longbine opened the hearing on SB27, and asked Eileen Ma, Assistant Revisor, Kansas Revisor of Statutes Office (ROS) to provide a bill brief. (Attachment 1)
Eric Turek, Director of Government and Public Affairs, Kansas Insurance Department (KID), provided oral proponent testimony on SB27, which he described as the "crown jewel" in the Insurance Department's proposed legislative agenda. This bill would allow the Commissioner the flexibility to set fees and save the industry money where there is the opportunity. (Attachment 2) Mr. Turek answered questions from Senator Gossage. Seeing no other questions, and no other proponent, opponent, or neutral testimony was submitted, Chairperson Longbine closed the hearing on SB27.
The Chairperson turned the Committee's attention to SB28, and opened the hearing.
