Reapportioning the districts of certain members of the Washburn university board of regents who are appointed by the city of Topeka.
Minutes Content for Mon, Feb 6, 2023
Revisor Jason Long briefed the committee on the bill (Attachment 1) He explained this bill would replace the requirement of one member from each senatorial district by creating three Board member districts. Each new district is based on existing Topeka city council districts.
Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, President, Washburn University, testified as an proponent for the bill (Attachment 2) She stated that this bill allows city council districts to be used as boundaries (rather than state senate districts).
Representative Vic Miller, 58th District, also presented as a proponent for the bill (Attachment 3), (Attachment 4). He explained this bill cleans up issues created when the legislature reapportioned State Senate seats.
Dr. Mazachek and Representative Miller responded to members' questions.
Senator Dietrich spoke in support of the bill.
The hearing on HB2092 was closed.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 a.m.
