SESSION OF 2002

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 384

As Recommended by Senate Committee on

Judiciary

Brief

SB 384 authorizes the Governor, or the Governor’s designee, to negotiate and execute agreements with Native American Indian tribes on behalf of the State of Kansas. The bill shall not be construed as authorizing the Governor to enter into a gaming compact.

The bill is effective upon publication in the Kansas Register.

Background

The bill was recommended by the 2001 Joint Committee on State Tribal Relations. A representative of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation suggested an amendment to clarify certain agreements would be subject to further action by the Legislature.

The bill has no fiscal impact.
