HB 2184 would allow a motor home or travel trailer to exceed 102 inches in width if the excess width is attributable to an appurtenance that extends no more than six inches beyond the body of the vehicle. The width of these vehicles, however, cannot exceed a total width of 108 inches. The term "appurtenance" includes an awning and its support hardware and any appendage intended to be an integral part of a motor home or travel trailer coach installed by the manufacturer or dealer. The term "appurtenance" does not include any item temporarily affixed or attached to the exterior of a motor home or travel trailer by the owner of the motor home or travel trailer for the purposes of transporting from one location to another.
Background
HB 2184 was requested by Federico Consultants on behalf of the Recreational Vehicle Independent Association. The conferee testified that the Association was seeking to eliminate the need to apply for a special permit to drive a recreational vehicle that is fashioned with a retracted awning, or other appurtenances that are integral parts of a motor home or travel trailer.
It was noted that the following states permit motor homes or travel trailers to extend beyond 102 inches: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wyoming.
No other conferees testified on the bill.
