SESSION OF 2001

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON HOUSE BILL NO. 2001

As Amended by House Committee on
Higher Education

Brief (1)

HB 2001, as amended, would convert the Northwest Kansas Area Vocational-Technical School to the Northwest Kansas Technical College. The legislation would be effective upon publication in the Kansas Register.

Background

The Northwest Kansas Area Vocational-Technical School located in Goodland presently operates as an area vocational school that awards degrees of completion to program graduates. Under HB 2001, the school would become a technical college with the authority to grant the associate of applied science degree. Four other area vocational schools have converted to technical colleges. They are: Flint Hills Technical College, Manhattan Area Technical College, North Central Kansas Technical College, and Wichita Area Technical College.

Testifying in favor of the bill was Representative Morrison and representatives of the State Board of Regents, who indicated that the State Board has approved the application from the Northwest Kansas Area Vocational-Technical School to become a technical college.

The Higher Education Committee amended the bill to make it effective upon publication in the Kansas Register so that graduates in the spring of 2001 may be awarded the associate degree.

The legislation has no fiscal impact.
