SESSION OF 2001

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 83

As Amended by House Committee on
Insurance

Brief (1)

SB 83, as amended, concerns the registration of motor vehicles. The House Committee amendment returns the bill to current law requiring verification of insurance upon registration or renewal, with two changes:

The bill further expands the ways an application for the registration of a vehicle may be made to include on-line and electronic means. The current $0.50 fee for registration by mail would apply to on-line and electronic registrations.

Background

As amended by the House Committee on Insurance, SB 83 is supported by the Director of Vehicles, the Kansas County Treasurer's Association, the Sedgwick County Treasurer, the Johnson County Treasurer, the Director of Revenue/Treasury- Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, the Riley County Treasurer, and the Ellis County Treasurer. Conferees commented that putting the bill back in its original form allows the County Treasurer's Association and the Director of Vehicles to pursue various options to find the best one for registering vehicles in Kansas.
