HCR 5063 would indicate the support of the Kansas Legislature for the establishment of a center of excellence for the scientific study of medicinal plants. In addition, the resolution would indicate support for the efforts of the research institutions of the State of Kansas to secure funding from the National Institutes of Health and the United States Department of Agriculture for the establishment and development of the center in Kansas.
Background
This resolution was introduced by Representative Welshimer. At the hearing on the resolution the members of the Committee were told that there were many native medicinal plants in Kansas and that their use by consumers was increasing. The Committee learned that there was a Great Plains Comprehensive Agricultural and Medical Institute for the study of medicinal plants. The Committee also was told that the center of excellence would be comprised of scientists from various postsecondary institutions in Kansas. There were no opponents to the resolution.
