HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 5050

Brief (1)



HCR 5050 would urge the U.S. Congress to pass legislation allowing state-inspected meat and meat products to be shipped interstate.



The resolution also would urge Congress to pass legislation increasing the number of poultry permitted to be slaughtered at home and offered to the consumer from 1,000 to 3,000.





Background



This resolution was introduced by the 1999 Special Committee on Agriculture. At the hearing on the resolution, the Secretary of Agriculture testified in support. She stated that she had encouraged members of the Kansas Congressional Delegation to support legislation permitting interstate shipment of state-inspected meat and meat products. She stated she has encouraged the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to be supportive of this type of legislation.



Also appearing in support of the resolution were representatives of the Kansas Livestock Association and the Kansas Farm Bureau.



The House Committee of the Whole amended the resolution to urge Congress to pass legislation to increase the number of poultry permitted to be slaughtered at home and offered to the consumer.
