SESSION OF 2000

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON HOUSE BILL NO. 2928

As Recommended by House Committee on

Governmental Organization and Elections

Brief (1)

HB 2928 amends the state election laws by authorizing the county election officer to appoint persons 16 years of age or older to serve as election judges or clerks. The bill authorizes only one of these individuals to serve per precinct.

Background

The Johnson County Election Commissioner, the Lyon County Clerk, and a representative of the Secretary of State testified in support of the bill. They stated that hiring 16-year-old individuals would help reduce the shortage of election workers and would foster civic education and participation by young people in the election process.

The House Committee on Governmental Organization and Elections placed HB 2928 on the Consent Calendar.

The Division of the Budget's fiscal note was unavailable when the bill was passed out of Committee.
