Brief (1)
HB 2622 establishes the Northeast Kansas Area Technical School as the Northeast Kansas Technical College. The bill becomes effective upon publication in the Kansas Register.
Background
In order for an area vocational school to be established as a technical college, the school must secure approval from the State Board of Regents and be specifically authorized by an act of the Legislature. Mr. Kenneth Clouse, Director of the Northeast Kansas Area Technical School (located in Atchison), explained that the State Board had approved the Northeast Kansas Technical College plan at a November, 1999, meeting. All that remains in order to complete the process is enactment of legislation. To date, four technical colleges have been authorized: Wichita Area Technical College (1995), Flint Hills Technical College (1995), North Central Technical College (1996), and Manhattan Area Technical College (1996). This change does not affect governance or funding of the school.
The House Committee on Education recommended that HB 2622 be placed on the consent calendar.
The Senate Committee on Education amended the bill to make it effective upon publication in the Kansas Register.
