Brief (1)
HB 2598 adds the 2000 Edition of the International Building Code to the current list of three building codes that are declared to comply with the Kansas Fire Prevention Code.
Background
The bill was supported by the Kansas Division of Architectural Services, the Codes Administrator for the City of Overland Park, the State Fire Marshal, and the American Institute of Architects of Kansas. Proponent said the change would facilitate the movement toward the adoption of one uniform building code by local jurisdictions.
The International Building Code was developed by representatives of the three codes that are now recognized in Kansas as in compliance with the State Fire Prevention Code, i.e., the Uniform Building Code, the Basic Building Code, and the Southern Standard Building Code. Conferees said the new code would provide the same safety as the other codes but allows more flexibility in the use of equivalent building materials.
