SESSION OF 2000

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON HOUSE BILL NO. 2258

As Amended by House Committee on

Transportation

Brief (1)

HB 2258 would amend current law regarding auxiliary driving lamps and fog lamps. The bill, as amended, would require a motor vehicle driver to turn off any auxiliary driving or fog lamps when approaching an oncoming vehicle within 500 feet or when approaching another vehicle from the rear within 500 feet.

From and after the effective date of the act and prior to July 1, 2001, a law enforcement officer will issue a warning citation to anyone violating the new provision.

Background

A trooper representing the Kansas Highway Patrol appeared before the House Transportation Committee to raise certain concerns about the accessibility of a switch to manually turn off the lamps.

The trooper also asked the Committee to include an amendment to allow the public one year to become informed about the change in the law.

HB 2258 would have no fiscal impact on state operations.
