SESSION OF 2000

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON SENATE BILL NO. 595

As Recommended by Senate Committee on

Judiciary

Brief (1)

SB 595 expands the crime of stalking to include "credible threats" that are communicated by electronic means. Electronic means is defined to include telephone, cellular phones, computers, video recorders, FAX machines, pagers, and computer networks.

Background

A Senate Judiciary Subcommittee reviewing SB 384, which, among other things, creates the new crime of electronic harassment, determined that the approach to the problem was better dealt with in SB 595.

The bill would have no fiscal impact on the state.
