Brief (1)
SB 500 would place the position of Assistant Director of the Kansas Water Office in the unclassified service and the person would serve at the pleasure of the Director of the Kansas Water Office. This change would occur only after a vacancy in the position. However, the bill would permit the current assistant director to voluntarily transfer to the unclassified service by submitting a written, signed request to the Director of the Kansas Water Office and the Director of Personnel Services of the Department of Administration.
The bill also would amend current law so that the terms of the members of the Kansas Water Authority other than the chairperson would end on January 15.
Background
This bill was requested by the Director of the Kansas Water Office who also appeared before the Committee in support of the bill. No other conferees appeared before the Committee on the bill.
The House Committee on Environment amended the bill so that the terms of the members of the Kansas Water Authority would all end on January 15 rather than at various times of the year. The request for this amendment came from a spokesperson from the Kansas Water Office.
According to the Kansas Water Office, the fiscal impact of the bill would depend on the unclassified salary of the position, which would be approved by the Governor. *Supplemental notes are prepared by the Legislative Research Department and do not express legislative intent.
