Brief (1)
SB 427 would allow truck or truck tractor owners from other states to purchase a 72-hour temporary registration to operate in Kansas. The temporary registration could be used instead of paying the fee for a 30-day temporary registration as current statute allows. The 72-hour registration would cost $26.
Background
The Director of Vehicles of the Department of Revenue requested the introduction of SB 427. She testified that the bill would bring Kansas into compliance with the International Registration Plan. Currently, Kansas only issues a 72-hour temporary permit for interstate commerce but not for intrastate commerce. It was noted a 72-hour permit would allow certain carriers such as rock haulers who only wish to operate for a couple of days in Kansas to purchase this kind of operating authority.
There were no opponents.
The Department of Revenue reports that there would be a negligible increase in the amount of fees collected. Implementing the new registration would require no additional expenditures.
