SESSION OF 1999

SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE ON

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 5034

As Recommended by House Committee on

Health and Human Services

Brief(1)

H.C.R. 5034 expresses the intent of the Kansas Legislature to encourage health care providers, particularly those who specialize in prenatal care, to provide information regarding HIV and AIDS to their patients and to encourage pregnant women to undergo testing for HIV infection.

Copies of the resolution are to be sent to the Secretary of Health and Environment and the Presidents of the Kansas Medical Society and the Kansas Association of Osteopathic Medicine.

Background

H.C.R. 5034 is the outgrowth of testimony presented to the House Committee on another bill indicating that, with appropriate treatment during pregnancy and birth, the probability of the transmission of HIV infection from an infected mother to her newborn can be lessened.

The resolution was supported by representatives of the Kansas Public Health Association and the Kansas State Nurses Association.
