S.B. 469 would repeal a statutory requirement that the Attorney General designate the color and design of sheriffs' department uniforms for all counties and provide instead that the county sheriff of each county make the designation.

Background

The bill was supported at the hearing before the Senate Committee on Elections and Local Government by the Kansas Sheriff's Association, the Barton County Sheriff, and the Attorney General. A letter from the Attorney General noted that requests are received from time to time from sheriffs' departments to change the color or design of uniforms but these have been denied since the current law requires uniformity throughout the state.

A representative of the Kansas Sheriff's Association and the Wyandotte County Undersheriff supported the bill at the House Committee hearing. The House Committee amended the bill to delete a provision that would have required the Attorney General's approval of any changes of uniform design or color made by a sheriff.

The bill has no fiscal impact on the state.
