Journal of the Senate
THIRTY-FIFTH DAY
______
Senate Chamber, Topeka, Kansas |
Tuesday, February 29, 2000--2:30 p.m. |
The Senate was called to order by President Dick Bond.
The roll was called with thirty-seven senators present.
Senators Biggs, Praeger and Pugh were excused.
Invocation by Chaplain Fred S. Hollomon:
Heavenly Father,
I want to thank You for the following Proverbs written centuries ago which speak to
our contemporary experiences. . . . .
A fool shows his annoyance at once;
But a prudent man overlooks an insult. (12:16)
Better a patient man than a warrior;
A man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. (16:32)
He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker. (17:5)
If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor; he too will cry out and not be answered
(21:13)
He who answers before listening--that is his folly and his shame. (18:13)
If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength. (24:10)
Do not gloat when your enemy falls;
When he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice. (24:17)
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
Someone else, and not your own lips. (27:2)
The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold;
But man is tested by the praise he receives. (27:21)
(And a little biblical humor) If a man loudly blesses his neighbor early in the morning, it
will be taken as a curse. (27:14)
And finally. . . . Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves;
For the rights of all who are destitute. (31:8)
I pray in the Name of Christ,
AMEN
