Journal of the Senate

TWENTIETH DAY
______
Senate Chamber, Topeka, Kansas
Monday, February 8, 1999--2:30 p.m.
The Senate was called to order by Vice-President Alicia L. Salisbury.

The roll was called with forty senators present.

Invocation by Chaplain Fred S. Hollomon:

       Heavenly Father,

You were not in the wind, nor the earthquake, nor the fire, but then there came a still,
      small voice. (I Kings 19:11b-12)

        Sometimes I get discouraged

      Trying to do what's right.

I've lost a lot of battles

      Fighting a fair fight.

        I'm tempted to cut corners,

To see what I can do

      With a little deception

Maybe win a round or two.

But every time this kind of thought

      Comes into my mind,

I can hear Your still, small voice,

``You know you're not that kind.''

I've tried to bargain with you, Lord,

Just let me cheat one time.

But again I hear that still, small voice,

``You know you're not that kind.''

So I'll walk the straight and narrow,

      And hopefully I will find

      Though I'm tempted to deceive,

      I'm really not that kind.

Once more I heard that still, small voice,

      ``Remember what you're fighting for.

You may lose some battles, child,

But you will surely win the war!''

I thank You for that assurance, Lord, in Jesus' Name,

      AMEN
