J o u r n a l o f t h e H o u s e SIXTH DAY -------- HALL OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TOPEKA, KAN., Tuesday, January 21, 1997, 11:00 a.m. The House met pursuant to adjournment with Speaker Shallenburger in the chair. The roll was called with 123 members present. Reps. Ballard and Storm were excused on excused absence by the Speaker. Prayer by Chaplain Washington: Heavenly Father, Word has come to us that members of our House family are grieving over the loss of loved ones. Would you comfort Gerry Ray, Sue Storm and Jim Morrison along with their families, during this time of their bereavement. And Father, as we return from the Martin Luther King Day, help us to serve the Martin Luther King way . . . unselfishly and unbiasedly. Would You lift the concerns of our convictions to a set of standards that are Heavenly, and then lower the concerns of our actions to accomplish Your good on earth, in the midst of Your people. Your Word says repeatedly, in Matthew 26:11, Mark 14:7 and John 12:8, that we will always have the poor with us. Father, as You reminded Dr. King, remind us of those who have little . . . the impoverished . . . the undernourished . . . the indigent . . . the inadequate . . . the poor and wanting. Help us to remember that even each of us is poor, in our exchange for the richness of Your benevolence. Would You use this poor House, to bless Your poor people. In the rich and powerful Name of Your Son, Amen and Amen.
